Course Descriptions

Creative Dramatics (4-5's) (6-8's)

In this supportive environment, children learn basic theater skills through theater games, improvisation and role-playing. Students develop their imaginations, intuition, and problem-solving skills while exploring and connecting with their creative selves. The “change me” box (a chest full of costume pieces and props for free exploration and story creation) is part of every class meeting.

Monologues, Improvisation and Scene Study (9-12's)

This class enables students to explore characters and learn how to make personal connections to them. They will learn how to analyze a character and answer the basic questions that actors must ask themselves when approaching a piece of work: Who? Where? What? Why? How? Students will practice the art of improvisation and engage in theater games, warm ups and vocal exercises. Students will be be assigned a monologue and/or scene to develop and present at the end of the session.

Teen Class - NEW FORMAT!

Classes include warm ups, theater games, improvisation and scene study. New for this year- each student will have the opportunity to participate in a "reading" of a full length play. A reading is when the actors remain on stage for the entire piece, acting the play in it's entirety. Absolute memorization is not necessary as each actor reads from his script which sits on a music stand in from of him/her. Over the course of the year, we will produce multiple readings to ensure an appropriate and fun role for each student in at least one of these readings. We will have approximately 3 rehearsals for each reading, which will take place on Wednesdays immediately following the regular class time (from 8-9 pm). The "performance" will be held on the 4th Wednesday. Only students involved in the particular reading will stay for those rehearsals. In this way, the students will have the chance to really apply what they learn in class to their work, without the time commitment necessary for a fully staged production. In doing this, students will get the experience of tackling a character and a play in it's entirety while enabling them to really understand what the playwright has written. These readings will be inter-generational which should give students a worthwhile experience in working with adult actors.

Please note, to make this class work as effectively as possible for all, it would be great if students could commit to signing up for a full year, (fall and spring sessions). This would help guarantee that each student has the opportunity to work on a role that is best suited for him/her over the course of the year, especially since plays are selected based on the students.
